Solution for IOS 5 Download Problems - Error -3200, -3259, -3002

As Apple servers are overwhelmed right now by users trying to download IOS 5, many users are reporting "Error -3200" or "Error -3259" for iPads.  The error is just an indication that your download is timing out because of all of the demand.  If you want to bypass this problem and get IOS 5 as soon as possible, here's what to do:

MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR DEVICE BEFORE UPGRADING.

1.  Download the IOS 5 Firmware directly from Apple by clicking on the links below, save the file to your desktop:

iOS 5 IPSW Firmware Update Files

2.  After downloading the desired firmware, you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the "Update" button in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file from your desktop.

3. Proceed with the upgrade as usual.

4. If you get Error -3002 at this point, try to do a Restore, rather than an Upgrade - remember to shift-click (or option-click on a Mac).

Please let me know if you have any issues with this procedure in the comments section below.

  2. Error 3259 happens inside iTunes when you are trying to download - did you download the firmware file from the link above instead?

    ReplyDelete
  3. the same error 3259 appears to me for iPhone 4 im using windows 7 64-bit and i deactivated the firewall and my Kasperski antivirus

  4. I am on Windows 7 64-bit as well - follow the links and directions above to get around Error -3259 which happens while you try to download through iTunes.

  5. I'm seconding Moe's comment. I'm getting the same error 3259 for IPhone 4 using Windows 7. It gets to anywhere between 150-250MB in and the error shows up. This has happened about a dozen times so far. Very frustrating.

  6. I understand - the whole point of this is post is to stop downloading the update from iTunes - there are links above where you can download the update straight from your browser without having to use iTunes, so you won't get the Error -3259.

  7. I'm still getting error 3200 even when trying to install it with the ispw. Tomorrow I'm going to try setting my phone into restore mode and see if that works.

  8. LOL @ people who were explaining problems with downloading through itunes! Jim, I like how you calmly explained that these people were dim-witted. Anyway, your instructions seem to have worked for me, after unsuccessfully trying the conventional way all night. Thank you sir.

  10. I cant find the ipsw-file on the desktop!? Tried to do a search in various places, and nothing!

Make sure that you SAVE to the Desktop, otherwise the file won't appear on the desktop. The file extension must be ".ipsw" to work correctly.

  12. Thanks! What's the difference between AT&T and Verizon?

  13. @ Jim, after numerous attempts I was able to get the download on my Iphone 3gs via this website, thanks a million!!!!
@ people, just follow the clear instructions and it will work out.

  19. Answers:

    1. Verizon and AT&T have different radios and hence different firmware for the iPhone 4.

    2. Check the file you download - make sure there is nothing AFTER ".ipsw" - delete this from the file name so that it ends with ".ipsw" and you should be good to go.

    3. When you go to choose the firmware to apply, just navigate to wherever you saved the ".ipsw" file - I used the desktop in the instructions for simplicity. Also, check #2 above - you may need to fix the filename.

    4. If you are getting firmware incompatible, if it possible you have a 3rd Generation iPod Touch and are trying to apply the wrong firmware?

    5. iPad 2 Wifi is iPad 2.1, the others are for iPad 2 3G Models - I believe 2.2 is GSM and 2.3 is CDMA.

  21. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! After trying everything, and I mean everything, this actually worked! I got the 3002 error and followed your directions exactly and now I'm done being frustrated and this probably saved my phone from being smashed into pieces! Thanks again! One question...I can delete the file off of my desktop right?

  22. i have a problem i download the firmware and everything i shift click on restore and get a error that says firmware is not completable NEED HELPP

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, you can delete the file from your desktop after the firmware has been applied.

If you are getting an error that the firmware is not compatible - what device do you have, and which file did you download?

  25. Thanks, the update gave me a 3002 error, but the restore seems to work great, thanks for this post. Apple really need to work on this, I'm hoping that over the air updates will work better in the future, Thanks Jim

  26. I tried all steps and worked when restored, but I can't get to sync after that. I read it has to do with the beta version? I don't know. The same iTunes can sync with other devices. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Are you running the iTunes beta? These should all be final released firmwares, no betas. As far as not being able to sync, you need to do a wired sync before you can wireless sync. Are you having trouble with the wired sync?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The 3GS link goes to an .ipsw file, so if you are getting a .zip, then definitely try changing the extension to .ipsw

3wart - glad it worked out!

    ReplyDelete
  32. the link saves a file named iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.zip
is this the right file?? just change the .zip to .ispw ???

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes - when I download it, it saves as "iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" - try renaming it to that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If you get the error 3002, do you "shift-click" on the restore buttone or do you just use that when you chose the file to update?

  38. After the 5th attempt to download Ios5 through iTunes (my least favorite Apple product) I found this post and it worked great. Downloaded the file for an iPad 1, loaded the software, got the 3002 error so I tried the restore and everything loaded back just fine.

    Thanks for the instructions.

  39. Hi Jim, you are a star!!
I have tried to download the update through iTunes at least 30 times but all failed with error 3259!!!
I followed your steps and voila, all done! I had the error 3002 too but since you've got a workaround here, no problem!
I suggest to download using software like Download Manager cos' it's faster and can resume.
    Thankssss!!!!

  40. Glad to see those having success! As to the restore, yes, upon completing the restore process, you should choose the downloaded firmware to being, and after that is restored, you will be prompted to choose a backup of your settings, apps, contacts, etc. to restore from.

  41. Thanks a lot for this plan, It works like a charm as many of them said after that i dont get to sync with itunes , anyway am glad its done. I dont see much of difference among the previous ios. Anyway thanks again for the help.

  44. Jim WOods, i have an iphone 4 (Verizon) and just saved the file to my desktop, how do i go into itunes and select this file? I've tried everything, can you send me instructions?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Since you are Anonymous, I cannot send you instructions, but you could try the instructions above, notably:

"2. After downloading the desired firmware, you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the "Update" button in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file from your desktop."

You can find the "Update" button by clicking on your device on the left side of iTunes, under the Summary tab, which should be the first to appear.

  46. Jim i did what you told me,shift click +update and selected the file 'iPhone4,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw', but its telling me the firmware is not compatible, i have an iPhone4 with verizon, what are my other options at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  47. You downloaded the firmware for the iPhone 4s - try the link above that one, for CDMA (Verizon):

    http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/041-9743.20111012.vjhfp/iPhone3,3_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ok so i downloaded the file as you told me, iPhone3,3_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw , tried uploading it, and gave me another error message 'The iPhone4' could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (3002). I tried this 5 times and the same error each time, any other suggestions at this point? Im really starting to hate Apple right now!

  49. You are the master! I had this problem for months for both my 3gs and ipad. Tonight I tried the iphone & it finally worked. After some problems, I changed zip to ipsw & when the 3002 error appeared I tried the restore and it worked. If the ipad works also I will declare you the Great master! I will let you know tommorrow. Really thanks a lot!!!!

  50. Hey Jim, worked out good! Downloaded file (took awhile),renamed file from .zip to .ipsw. Tried the upgrade first, gave me the 3002 error; then went to a restore. After the restore, I then restored from my backup. That seemed to work great; thank you for the info. I was getting very furious getting the timeouts 6-9 times daily! Important to backup first! Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Are you navigating to the desktop THROUGH iTunes Restore?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Worked! Thanks. Shiftclicking 'update' brought up so I tried shiftclicking 'restore' and it worked!

For those who are not sure where the download is saved, just right-click on the file in the Download window and select "open containing folder" and then move the file to Desktop if you want.

  70. If you are having a problem with "zip" at the end, try to open the file and unzip it, the file you need should be within.
